Three years of hard work  have produced  All My Husbands.  The novel is divided into two parts, Book One and Book Two.  In Book One, you will meet Lila Mae in her early years and follow her into her40's.   Her husbands,  Jimmy, Henry, Ezra and Buster are distinct personalities who help to shape Lila's development.  You will hear Lila Mae's own voice talking to you at the beginning and at the end of the book.

 Excerpt from Buster's Story

When I looked around to find Lila, she was gone.  The busboy approached me with a business card.  "The tall lady who was sitting over there asked me to give you this," he said.  I read her name and title, "Lila Mae Padgett, Esquire, Attorney at Law."  Her office phone and fax numbers were listed.  Then, I flipped the card over and there was a handwritten phone number.  "Her home phone!  That's first base.  Heaven is smiling on me today."

That evening around seven, I called the girl.  A recorded message came on.  "That's all right, " I thought.  "I can wait.  This lady is worth waiting for."  Just then, Tanya called and I had to switch gears.  "Hey, Baby, how are you doing?" I asked.  She went on to tell me about her day.  She was a schoolteacher and some smartass kid had given her a hard time.  I tried to console her.  I liked Tanya, mostly as a friend, but she could be a comfort....when I needed someone to hold.

Excerpt from Lila Mae's Story

One day, after a brief rain shower, I stepped outside the house and walked to our peach orchard.  Gazing upward as the sun dismissed the clouds, I spotted a gorgeous rainbow.  I wondered, "Where does its mystery lead?"  I wanted to climb aboard that arching multicolored sliding board and ride it to its end.  As I looked around the orchard at the still green peaches, I began to feel closed in.  Then, refocusing my attention on the endless sky, I felt myself opening up and connecting to the world.  I wondered how many people in South America or Africa or even California were looking at the same sky.

AT THE AIRPORT

You want proof of identity?

Which identity?

Genetically, I am human

Flesh, bone and blood

On a temporary pass to Planet Earth.

Nationally, I am American,

An Alabama child brought up

On faith, hope and fading segregation.

Politically, I am African American,

A bonafide member of

The worldwide African diaspora.

Physically, I am woman

Made for love, motherhood,

Work, resilience and creativity.

Racially, I am a mix

Of African, European and Choctaw Indian,

A blend of groups and cultures.

Professionally, I am an educator,

Rooting out ignorance wherever it

Entangles truth and strangles growth.

Spiritually, I am a raceless,

Timeless reflection of God’s grace,

A point of light echoing the stars.

Scientifically, I am a broadband connection

To all beings in all places, electronically

Vibrating through all dimensions.

They call me Patricia.

Who are you?
