Quick Tips for Coping with Loss

Have you recently experienced a major loss, such as being laid off from a job, losing a loved one due to divorce or death, or losing your home?  In recent months, many people have been separated from someone or something that played a major role in their lives.

Under these circumstances, it is normal to feel distressed, stunned or disoriented.  You will need some time to grieve, which is the beginning of the healing process.  Then try these coping strategies or some variation that suits you.

  • Even while grieving, do not isolate yourself completely.  Reconnect to the world in simple ways, such as walking in the park, gardening, listening to upbeat music, going to an art gallery, caring for a pet or whatever interests you.
  • Next, you will need to connect to other people. Each day, make yourself talk to at least one person so that you do not become isolated.
  • Write a letter (not e-mail or text message) to someone you have neglected.  Mail it and make that person's day.  As you send out good vibes, you feel better.
  • Join a support group so that you can help each other.  Attend worship services or offer some volunteer service for a good cause.
  • Create a vacuum in your mind by releasing little by little your sense of loss.  This is not easy, but it will create a space for new, beneficial experiences to flow in.
  • Build something.  Draw something.  Bake something.  Sing loudly.  Dance.
  • Set an intention to connect to your inner Spirit, the part of you that is made in God's image.  Quiet your noisy thoughts, take a few deep breaths and relax.
  • Open your heart space and listen for guidance.  Whatever you feel led to do, act on it.  Remember, God is bigger than the problem.
